Chrysler issues five recalls, covering 840,000 vehicles worldwide.

The Detroit News (7/3, Shepardson, 119K) reports that Chrysler has issued five new recalls covering 840,000 vehicles, including 490,000 for defective electronics in head restraints. 442,000 of the vehicles are in the United States. The News notes that the largest recall has to do with problems with active head restraints which may prevent the systems from functioning properly. According to the News, this announcement raises “the total number of separate recall campaigns to 12 — involving nearly 3.3 million vehicles — that the Auburn Hills automaker has issued since early June, when it mounted a public fight with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over fire risks in older Jeep SUVs.” David Cole, former chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, says that Chrysler demonstrate to NHTSA and owners that it is committed to fixing issues.
