Johnson & Johnson Drug Company Agrees to Pay $5.9 Million in Risperdal Settlement

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has agreed to a settlement of $5.9 million stemming from a 2008 Risperdal lawsuit. The suit accused the company of using illegal, unfair and deceptive practices when marketing the antipsychotic drug, according to The National Trial Lawyers.

The lawsuit was originally filed by the Montana State Attorney General, who also alleged that the company knew the drug could put patients at risk of side-effects. The suit further says that the company chose to hide that fact. The main side effect referenced is the growth of male breasts on boys, also known as Risperdal gynecomastia. Other side effects include: diabetes, bone loss and pancreatitis.

Risperdol is used to treat children and adults with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is also prescribed for children age six and older who have been diagnosed with autism.

Additionally, the governments of Louisiana, South Carolina and Arkansas each have lawsuits filed against Janssen. Louisiana originally secured a verdict of $257 million, but it was recently overturned.

In 2013, Johnson & Johnson, along with Janssen, agreed to a $2.2 billion settlement to resolve charges with the U.S. Department of Justice involving the misleading marketing tactics of the drug and other products. In this suit, the drug company was accused of improperly marketing the drug’s use for children and concealing the side effects.
