The truth about the gun industry may be found in the depositions

In a story that takes a very negative line towards the gun industry, the New York Times (5/28, A1, Mcintire, Luo, Subscription Publication, 1.68M) reports on its front page that the world’s firearms makers “have been largely silent in the debate over gun violence,” but their “voices emerge from thousands of pages of depositions in a series of liability lawsuits a decade ago.” A review of the documents by the Times shows “the industry’s leaders arguing, often with detachment and defiance, that their companies bear little responsibility, beyond what the law requires, for monitoring the distributors and dealers who sell their guns to the public.” The Times says that many of those who testified are “still with the same companies” and “have not gone away.”
