Violent shaking prompts Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall 457,000 LG and Kenmore Elite washing machines

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Tuesday, Dec. 18 that it is recalling 457,000 LG and Kenmore Elite top-loading washing machines. The recall comes after the CPSC received 343 complaints of excessive shaking during use.

The shaking poses a both a personal injury and property damage risk. In 187 of the issued complaints, the machine’s shaking was so excessive that it actually caused property damage. In one case, the defect caused physical harm to a consumer.

According to the CPSC, the issue is prompted when the user runs an unbalanced load of laundry. The unbalanced load causes the drum inside the washing machine to come loose and for the excessive shaking to occur. The CPSC and the manufacturers recommend immediate suspension of machine usage if the model is shaking as described.

The recall is for six models of LG and Kenmore Elite washing machines, produced between February 2010 and November 2011 and sold between April 2010 and December 2012.

The washing machines are a top load style and were manufactured in beige, white and graphite colors. The Kenmore Elite models were sold at Kmart and Sears, while the LG models were sold at Best Buy, Home Depot, Kmart, Sears, and other local retailers. They were priced between $899 and $1,099.
