Hospitals dole out too much acetaminophen to patients, according to study

Reuters (11/13, Pittman) reports that a study of two Boston hospitals found that one in 15 patients treated with acetaminophen got more than the FDA maximum daily dose, and that this happened to many of those patients on multiple occasions. Those patients most likely to receive more than the daily recommended maximum were in the intensive care or surgical units, or were issued multiple products containing the ingredient. The FDA warns that acetaminophen overdose can cause liver damage, although none of the patients given the increased dosage developed liver failure in this instance.
