Chevron Loses Major Pollution Ruling

 

Reuters (10/18, Garcia) reports that Ecuadorean plaintiffs on Tuesday announced that an order recently issued by an Ecuadorean court allows them to seize some $200 million worth of assets belonging to US oil company Chevron Corp. As Reuters notes, this decision represents a new legal blow to Chevron in the ongoing pollution liability case, and the plaintiffs have said that among the assets ordered turned over are $96.3 million that Ecuador’s government owes Chevron, money held in Ecuadorean bank accounts by Chevron, and licensing fees generated by the use of the company’s trademarks in the country
