In continuing coverage, USA Today (9/27, Weise) reports that the Trader Joe’s peanut butter recall has been “expanded to more than 100 products sold nationally in many other supermarkets”; and according to the CDC, “at least 30 people have been infected with salmonella Bredeney in 19 states.” of those, “four were hospitalized” but there has been no related deaths reported. Portales, New Mexico-based Sunland Inc. “expanded the recall to include almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, tahini (sesame seed butter) and roasted blanched peanut products under various names manufactured between May 1 and Sept. 24.”
CNN (9/27, Falco) in its “The Chart” bog adds that Sundland VP Katalin Coburn said that thus far, there has been “no link to any specific product,” but rather “14 of those sickened had been interviewed by health officials and 12 of those people recalled eating Trader Joe’s peanut butter. She says that’s ‘the reason for this entirely preemptive and voluntary recall.'” Meanwhile, the FDA was unable to comment because the investigation is still ongoing.
